BDAE Press Release: Technical and Engineering Support to local NHS Trust during the Covid-19 Pandemic

An engineering team from BAE Systems Submarines will describe how the company collaborated with University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust and the Lancaster-based specialist sewing company Lancastle, to develop a game changing PPE respirator to allow frontline staff to safely work without risk of infection by Covid-19.

In mid-2019 the Trust asked BAE Systems and Lancastle to help overcome an acute PPE challenge to create a solution suitable for clinicians. The system was developed in only 20 weeks, during which time this novel PPE was rigorously tested by NHS clinicians via Human Factors trials undertaken by BAE Systems Submarines at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary. The rapid product development was followed by strenuous certification tests and assessments by the British Standards Institute and the UK Health and Safety Executive. The product is unique and has generated intense national and international interest; it has been in service with the NHS around Morecambe Bay since July 2020.

The BAE Systems Submarines team was led by Michael Fraser, Head of Engineering – Specialist Engineering and Technology Group and Global Engineering Fellow. He will be joined by other members of the collaborative design team and also by both Stuart Hosking-Durn, who is Head of Resilience and Patient Flow for the Trust, and Neville Clokey who is Managing Director of the Lancaster-based specialist sewing company, Lancastle.

The presentation will be delivered by Zoom at 7.30pm, on Thursday, January 20th. The talk is free and available to all. Anyone wishing to take part who is not on the BDAE correspondence list should contact Josh Ashley at “” to register their interest and receive joining instructions.
