BDAE Press Release: We need you – our future’s bright if you’re part of it

At an annual event organised by Barrow & District Association of Engineers (BDAE), Professor Julie Mennell DL will speak at Furness College, Barrow, after presenting this year’s Student Bursary Awards. She will discuss Cumbria’s strengths, opportunities and challenges and the transformational role our young people can have in delivering a prosperous future for us all.

Professor Mennell is a Physics and Mathematics graduate of the University of Leeds. Prior to becoming Vice Chancellor at the University of Cumbria, Professor Mennell held the positions of Deputy Vice Chancellor (Development) and Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) for the University of Sunderland, leading on portfolio and partnership development, academic and research provision, student experience and outcomes.  Professor Mennell’s academic field of interest is in forensic and crime scene science, involving contributions to forensic science strategy, education and workforce development in the UK and overseas, including her serving on the Home Office Forensic Science Advisory Council and the Skills for Justice Forensic Science Occupational Skills Committee. She was also co-convenor of the Higher Education Academy’s DVC network and has held senior positions at Northumbria and Teesside Universities.

 

The lecture will be preceded by an overview of the BDAE Bursary Awards Scheme and awards to successful apprentices and sixth form students from local schools and colleges for their achievements in studying engineering related subjects. There will also be a special award to the winners of the “Engineering Design Technology Competition” that recognises the delivery of engineering design and associated practical skills within our Secondary Schools. This year the total value of the awards made to local students will total over £7,000.

 

The evening at Furness College, Channelside, Barrow, will commence with the Bursary Awards at 7.15pm, followed by the lecture on Thursday, November 17th. The talk is free and available to all. Information is also available on the website: www.bdae.org.uk
