Membership is open to anyone with an interest in Engineering. Membership fees are currently £3 per annum. For students under 25 or Retired people over 65 it is £2 per annum. Life membership is £40. Annual subscriptions are due in September, at the start of the lecture season. The preferred method of payment is by Standing Order, however fees can also be handed to any of the BDAE officers or councillors or a cheque sent to the Treasurer.

1. The name of the Association is "The Barrow and District Association of Engineers"
2. The Association is established for the promotion of lectures and discussions on the science and practice of Engineering. Such events are generally open to members of the public with allowed exceptions. Visits to sites of special interest may be undertaken.
3. The Council of the Association (hereinafter called "the Council") shall consist of a President, the Vice Presidents, twelve (12) Ordinary Members, an Honorary Treasurer and an Honorary Secretary. Five to form a Quorum.
4. The Association shall consist of Honorary Members, Ordinary Members and Associate Members. Any member, except Associate, may become a Life Member.
5. Subscriptions for any of the grades shall be as determined from time to time by the Council.
6. Honorary Members shall be invited, accepted and elected by the Council. They will be distinguished Engineers residing in the District.
7. All member grades shall be interested in any form of Engineering
8. Associate Members shall be Student or Apprentice Engineers, aged not less than sixteen (16) who shall retire from the grade at twenty (20) years of age, but may seek election as an Ordinary Member. Associates will be eligible to vote but will not be entitled to hold office.
9. Vice Presidents may be elected from time to time from persons who have distinguished themselves in the field of Engineering or who have excelled in their service to the Association.
10. Honorary Members may attend any General Meeting. They may read papers and take part in the discussions, but not be entitled to vote.
11. Ordinary Members shall have all the privileges of the Association and shall be eligible for any office.
12. The President shall be appointed for a two (2) year term of office. Vice Presidents, Honorary Treasurer, Honorary Secretary and Ordinary Members of the Council shall retire annually.
13. The Council shall have the authority to make temporary appointments to fill any vacancy on the Council which may occur during that year.
14. All officers shall be elected at the Annual General Meeting.
15. The President, and Vice Presidents shall be nominated by the Council.
16. The Associations Constitution and Bye Laws may only be changed at an Annual General Meeting.
1. Candidates for admission as Ordinary Members and Associate Members shall be recommended by at least two (2) Ordinary Members of the Association. Application for membership shall be made only on the Associations form.
2. A proposed membership will be reviewed by the President, Honorary Secretary and two (2) Council Members. Ratification shall be achieved at the first appropriate Council Meeting.
3. All subscriptions shall become payable in April of each year and shall cover membership until the following March. Subscriptions may be payable by cash, cheque or standing order (the preferred method). Members wishing to become Life Members may do so by making one single all embracing payment.
4. Subscriptions shall become payable upon acceptance of an application.
5. Any member whose subscription is two (2) years in arrears and does not pay within one month after receiving a written request to do so, shall cease to be a Member of the Association.
6. The Council shall have the power to, suspend the membership of any Member who has wittingly acted in contravention of the Constitution and Bye Laws of the Association and, refuse any subsequent application for membership.
7. The Annual General Meeting of the Association shall be held during April of each year. At this meeting the appointment of Officers for the following year shall take place.
8. Ordinary General Meetings for the reading of papers, discussions, etc., may be held monthly commencing in September and continuing to the end of March. Visits to sites of interest may be arranged during the remaining months or at any other suitable time.
9. With the object of keeping correct records of discussions, and in the absence of the Honorary Secretary, the Council shall undertake such responsibility at Council Meetings and Annual General Meetings.
10. All financial transactions - except ordinary current expenses - shall be under the direct authority of the Council. The Honorary Treasurer shall maintain all financial records and action current expenditures.
11. The accounts of the Association shall be audited by two members of the Association who are not members of the Council.
12. The accounts of the current year shall close at the end of March. Transactions received or expended after that date shall be included in the accounts of the following year.
13. At each Annual General Meeting the Council shall, through the offices of the Honorary Secretary, present a general report and the Honorary Treasurer shall submit a certified financial statement. In the absence of either Honorary person, the Council shall undertake the tasks.
14. Election of Officers or amendments to the Constitution or Bye Laws at the Annual General Meeting shall be by either show of hands or ballot as required by the President.
