BDAE Young Engineers Bursary Awards
Background
In order to try to raise the awareness of Engineering as a career amongst young people in Furness, the Barrow and District Association of Engineers runs an annual bursary known as "The Young Engineers Awards".
The Association itself and a number of engineering companies in the district sponsor this. It is of concern to the Barrow and District Association of Engineers, and to many others also, that so few young people are entering the engineering profession. It is in an effort to reverse this trend that the Association instituted this award at the instigation of a former BDAE President, Mr Tony Peak, in 1998. It is intended that the bursary is used to purchase books or other equipment to enable the recipient to further their education.
All awards are presented at the Associations November lecture.
Bursary Sponsors
The Bursary is supported with the help of the generous sponsorship by the following organisations:-
BAE Systems Submarine

Student Bursary Awards
Student Bursaries are awarded to students at Barrow Sixth Form College, Ulverston Victoria High School, Millom School and Chetwynde School, on the basis of their results in AS level examinations in Science and Technology subjects taken at the end of their first year of sixth form studies, together with their enthusiasm for engineering activities.
A student winner from each institution is nominated by his or her teachers, these nominations are ratified by a BDAE Bursary Committee which, in addition, selects an overall winner on the basis of detail provided by the school.
A
pprentice Bursary AwardIn 2000, following various discussions and having achieved a suitable level of sponsorship, the student bursary was extended into the area of the Engineering Apprenticeships in the Furness area with an award to be known as the BDAE Apprentice Bursary to be made at the end of the apprentices first year.
The apprentice award will be based initially upon academic qualification and performance in first year studies together with enthusiasm for engineering and practical ability. The Association placed emphasis on the academic as it wishes to encourage academic apprentices and show that the traditional university route is not the only way to a degree, a high flying career and a position of leadership in the industry.
By preference, the award will be based upon nominations of apprentices from the local Small and Medium size Enterprises (SMEs), but can also based upon a nomination from amongst Furness College apprentice students.
Conditions
i) To be known as "The Young Engineers Awards" sponsored by the Barrow and District Association of Engineers.
ii) The awards are made for the purpose of purchasing books or equipment to enable the recipient to further his or her education in an enhanced manner.
iii) The student awards are open to students of Barrow, Millom, Ulverston or Chetwynde 6th Forms studying A Level science subjects with a view to taking a Science or Engineering degree at University, and are judged on the basis of AS level results from exams taken at the end of the first year of sixth form.
iv) The apprentice awards are open to first year apprentices in the employment of locally based SMEs and/or enrolled in apprentice engineering courses at Furness College.
v) The award winners are confirmed by a vetting panel made up of members of the Association.
vi) The awards are presented at the Associations November lecture which is held normally in the third week of that month. Representatives from all participating schools are invited as is the local media. Recipients are expected to attend and must inform BDAE of the reason if they are unable to be present.

Engineers design and built the products we all use daily as well as the massive projects we sometimes take for granted. We will be hearing about one very large project tonight. I have found my career in engineering to be both fascinating and rewarding. My father was a civil engineer, he built bridges for a living and with a passion so I had, I guess, a role model of the very best kind. It is the Association’s hope that the encouragement of the Bursary will awaken such passion in these young people.
Before we move on to the awards themselves, a few words of thanks

2000: The continuing sponsorship has allowed us this year to make the main bursary awards and in addition the first set of awards to the most improved student in engineering subjects in each school. The awards were presented at an extremely interesting lecture in November on the Formula Student Racing Car designed, procured and built by students at Lancaster University, and the bursaries were awarded as follows:- First Gregory Foot of Victoria High, Second Caroline Hufton of Dowdales, Third equal Christopher Plant of Parkview and Daniel Sharpe of St Bernard's.
The Improvers awards were also made to Daniel McGowan, Alfred Barrow; Chris Townson, Dowdales; Mark Saunders, Parkview; Kelly-Marie Hartley, St Bernard's; Gavin Morgan, Thorncliffe; Stuart Eccles, Walney; Nicola Rogers, Cartmel Priory; Adam McCullogh, John Ruskin; Wayne Pattinson, Millom; James Davidson, Victoria High.

1999: Due to additional sponsorship from a number of firms in the district involved in a wide variety of engineering pursuits, three bursaries were given valued at £100, £75 and £25 respectively. These were won by Frazer Daly of Millom School, David Howarth of Victoria High, and as third was too close to separate Alex Patterson of St Bernards and Paul Wright of Walney School. All of whom have gone on to do 'A' level studies. They report that these are going well and they are now involved in University applications and interviews. We hope to hear of their continued success in 2001.
**********************************************************************
1998: The first year of the award, two bursaries were given and were won by Oliver Gray of Cartmel School who has now successfully completed his studies at Barrow 6th Form College and Catriona MacKinnon of Ulverston Victoria who has also successfully completed her studies in their 6th Form. Both have done extremely well even though Catriona was inclining towards veterinary studies. Both have now embarked on degree courses, Oliver at Warwick doing Mathematics and Physics and Catriona at Edinburgh doing Veterinary Science. The Association wishes them all the best for the future and looks forward to reporting their further progress.
